Describing the incident to Now magazine , he said: "I was terrified. At first we thought they had guns because they were saying, ‘I’ve got guns. We’re going to kill you, we’re going to f*****g kill you!’ but then I could hear – there were three cars and I was in the front car at the time – I could hear Kate screaming in the back car and after one or two minutes I thought, ‘I hope they didn’t have guns’.

"When I said, ‘Where’s your gun, where’s your f*****g gun?’ they didn’t have any. I know that was a stupid thing [to say] but they didn’t have them."

Neil says he could hear Katie, 39, screaming in the back of the other car and jumped out his own vehicle to chase one of the attackers away.

He says he was hit in the head when he tried to start the car.

He added to the mag: "I’m Kate’s best friend. I’m not employed to be security but you’ve got to do the best you can do. The other people in the car didn’t do anything, hence why I got whacking."

Katie was filming for the new series of her reality show My Crazy Life when it happened.

Neil went on to say they had a "target" on their backs as they were driving round with hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of camera equipment.

Katie was petrified for her kids and frantic as the thugs made off with the keys, leaving them stranded on the roadside.
