Jeremy Edwards has announced he's quit Hollyoaks, admitting that the heavy trolling he received while on the show played a part in the decision.

The soap star, 49, returned to the Channel 4 soap last year as part of its 25th anniversary episode, over 20 years after his character Kurt Benson was killed off.

His friend Tony believed he'd seen a ghost after Kurt was killed off-screen in a jet ski accident in 1999.

And while soaps are known for bringing characters back from the dead, for many viewers the storyline was too unbelievable and saw Jeremy receive cruel trolling as a result.

Taking to Twitter last week, Jeremy tweeted: "It is with a heavy heart I am announcing I will NOT be returning to #Hollyoaks.

"Many reasons but I'd be lying if I said being judged on here hasn't influenced my decision.

"Never say never but for now I'm done.

"Thank you to those who have supported me for me."

He finished the post with a red love heart emoji.

His Twitter followers said they were devastated to see him go.

Another posted: "Aww no! Gutted to read this! I've watched from near enough the start of Hollyoaks and always loved your character, then and now! If you like doing it then who cares what people think! Don't spend your life unhappy though, either by staying or going! Do what makes YOU happy!"

A third said: "Such a shame, it's always a delight to see a familiar face on our screens… maybe one day you will grace the streets of Chester again."
