A couple who created a homemade remedy to combat their own hair loss have turned it into a multi-million pound business.

Gail, 46, and Matt Waterman, 44, put their heads together to make a shampoo to promote hair growth.

The pair, from Rotherham in South Yorkshire, had tried countless expensive products to combat their hair loss but nothing seemed to work.

So they invented a homemade remedy using caffeine, rosemary extract, biotin and lupin protein which are known to promote hair regrowth, reports Yorkshire Live.

The couple initially sold their products on Amazon but it soon went on to sell two tubes per minute.

Their Watermans product has since transformed into a multi-million pound business and is the most searched for haircare brand in the world.

It has helped alopecia sufferers and even cancer patients who have struggled to grow their hair after chemotherapy.

The Watermans said: "We just created the products for our own benefit.

"But because it was so effective, we decided to pass it on to other people who had hair loss problems with no success as Gail had customers who not been able to find anything that helped.

"We both saved money from our savings and made our first 5,000 bottles of shampoo, initially just putting them for sale on Amazon."

Three months later, Gail and Matt were already out of stock and they were selling a tube every thirty seconds as they became more popular.

The couple made £5 million in 2019, almost £10 million in 2020 and their earnings continue to rise.

The business, which began in 2014, has also donated £85,000 worth of stock to cancer patients.

Caroline Everitt, an Assistant Practitioner Radiographer, was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer in 2018 and has credited Watermans as the reason her hair is now the best it has even been.

She said: "I was really surprised how quickly I lost my hair, like within a week of the first cycle of chemotherapy.

"I felt physically sick to be honest. It didn’t all fall out in one go, it was gradually thinning, and by the new year, it was all gone.

"I really hated it when it was tufty, but it was winter when I was fully bald. It was incredibly hard."

In just a few months, Caroline claims she saw her hair growing back thicker and shinier than it was before.

Watermans shampoo costs £13.95, while shampoo and conditioner are available for £24.95.
