Every area in England – bar one – is now recording rising coronavirus infection rates as the UK hit a grim milestone today.

Just one area has reported a fall in new cases in recent days, as the country reports the highest daily death toll and record infection numbers seen in the pandemic so far.

The UK recorded 1,325 deaths on Friday, along with 68,053 new infections.

New official figures show Richmond-upon-Thames in south west London is the only area of England to have recorded infections rates going down in the week to January 4.

Its week-on-week rates dropped from 629.7 per 100,000 people with 1,247 new cases, from a rate of 639.3 –  or 1,266 cases – the previous week.

It came as government scientists said the UK's R rate has risen to between 1.0 and 1.4, following household mixing at Christmas.

The figure was released by government scientific advisory committee SAGE, and means that every 10 infected people are passing the virus to up to 14 others.

New figures have since emerged to show another capital borough was sitting atop the list with the highest infection rates in the country, after Mayor Sadiq Khan declared a 'major incident' in London today.

Going by the most recent population estimates, as many as one in 16 people in Barking and Dagenham had tested positive for the virus during the week ending January 4.

The east London borough has the highest infection rate in the country, and it is rapidly increasing.

It is recording a rate of 1687.1 new infections per 100,000 people, with 3,592 new cases.

In the week to December 28 the borough recorded 2,449 new cases, amounting to a rate of 1150.3 cases per 100,000 people.

Mr Khan today declared the NHS was at risk of being overwhelmed in London, as hospitals struggle with soaring coronavirus patient admissions.

The figures are still thought to be some weeks out from reflecting Christmas period transmissions, or the effect of the third national lockdown.

Statisticians have previously said to expect a three-week lag in deaths from coronavirus infections.

NHS testing advice also warns the virus can take up to 10 days and show symptoms.

The latest figures for the seven days to January 4, are based on tests carried out in laboratories and in the wider community, and show London and Essex are recording the highest infection rates.

Redbridge, also in London, has the second highest rate, up from 1,166.4 to 1,559.2, with 4,759 new cases.

Thurrock in Essex has the third highest rate, up from 1,252.1 to 1,540.1, with 2,685 new cases.

Rampant case numbers in the capital and England's south east are being blamed on the new mutant coronavirus strain scientists believe originated in Kent.

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the most recent four days (January 5-8) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

The 10 areas with the biggest week-on-week rise in rates are:

  • Halton (up from 279.7 to 1,172.2)
  • Isle of Wight (255.3 to 1,132.1)
