The suspect in a "car attack" in which five people were killed in Germany was drunk, a press conference has heard.

Five people including a toddler are believed to have died and up to 15 more injured after a Range Rover ploughed into people in a pedestrian zone in Trier.

The public prosecutor has this evening told a press conference that the suspect in the attack was drunk.

There are no indications of an Islamist or religious motive, they added.

The public prosecutor said the suspect does not seem have prior convictions.

Witnesses earlier said people screamed in panic and some were thrown into the air by the car as it crashed through the shopping zone.

Mayor of Trier, Wolfram Leibe, said the victims include a nine-month-old baby and a 72-year-old woman.

He said there are several dead in the “blackest day in Trier after the Second World War.”

Officers are scouring the area in search of evidence, backed by police carrying sub-machine guns.

"We have arrested one person, one vehicle has been secured," police said, adding that a 51-year-old German suspect was now being questioned.

The mayor told broadcaster N-TV that people who saw the incident were "totally traumatised" and the street "looks a bit like after a war".

He was overcome by tears earlier as he spoke to reporters, and described the incident as a "rampage".

Witnesses in Trier, in the south west of the country, said a dark grey Range Rover had smashed into people at random.

The 4×4 raced through a pedestrianised zone at a speed estimated to be 40mph.

Mr Leibe said he did not know the motive for the incident.
