A 27-year-old woman with the "biggest smile" tragically died after being hit by a car.

Antonia St Louis was struck by a Volkswagen Golf in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, in the early hours of Saturday and was sadly pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.

A 28-year-old man who was travelling with Antonia was also hit by the vehicle and taken to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

A 31-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by driving without due care and attention.

He has since been released under investigation, police said.

A file in relation to Antonia's death has been passed to south Manchester Coroners' Court, a spokesman confirmed.

Tributes have been paid to 'beautiful' and 'genuine' Antonia, who lived in Ashton.

She was remembered for having the 'biggest smile,' the Manchester Evening News reports.

Close friend Zoe Connor said: "My heart is absolutely breaking for you all. Antonia was the best big sister to my beautiful niece, she will be forever remembered and honoured by our family.

"Love and prayers to all of you, rest in peace darling girl."

In a statement released through GMP, Antonia’s family said: “Antonia was a loving daughter, sister and granddaughter.

“She was a loyal friend and loved by many.

“She had a huge personality and lust for life and added sunshine to many lives.

"She will be missed and in our hearts forever – this world will be a little darker without her.”

Stacey Wilcox said: "We were close and I'm truly devastated. She will be missed by so many and I'm most definitely lucky to have known her."

A large number of floral tributes and balloons have also been left at the scene of the horror crash on Manchester Road.

One friend wrote on Facebook: "Honestly one of the most beautiful and genuine souls I’ve ever met, always had time for everyone and forever had the biggest smile on her gorgeous face.

"She will be so sorely missed by everyone that had the absolute pleasure of knowing her.

"Forever going to miss are crazy laugh n cry’s. Antonia my friend till we meet again."

Another said: "This just doesn't seem real and I just can't get my head around it my lil cousin has become a beautiful angel.

"Miss Antonia St Louis I love you and I will miss you dearly. Sending big hugs to all the family and friends."

Another pal wrote: "Lost for words! Utter and truly heart broken for my dear friend. And the hurt her family are going through.

"Antonia Caroline I love you till the end. Fly high my beautiful soul Scorpio sister."

Police say their enquiries are still ongoing, and have urged anyone who may have witnessed the collision to come forward.
