A brave little girl who discovered her aggressive brain cancer had returned just days after her 11th birthday has died.

Emmy Reid had battled medulloblastoma – a common type of cancerous brain tumor in children – for almost a year.

She had received radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment and in September doctors at Birmingham Children's Hospital had told her the disease was in remission.

But only weeks later, her family was told the cancer had returned and was more aggressive, having spread down the child's spine.

Doctors then told the family Emmy's cancer was terminal.

The family were planning to have an early Christmas so they could spend it together, but sadly this did not happen, Birmingham Live reports.

Mum Leanne, dad Dan, brother Jak and sister Eliza were by Emmy's side as she battled the cancer.

After watching her favourite Christmas film and listening to Disney music, the 11-year-old passed away in the evening of November 20 with her mum and dad by her side.

Her auntie Chantal Richards described Emmy as "amazing" with "a smile which would light up a room".

She told Birmingham Live: "She was such a brave little girl. She was amazing and had a smile which would light up a room.

"She was a huge Harry Potter fan and loved the comic Paul O'Grady.

"She was placed in remission in September but just weeks later we were given the terrible news the cancer had returned.

"We were told we might have just weeks with Emmy but it turned out to be days.

"We are all devastated by her death and will miss her terribly."

A GoFundMe fundraising appeal set up by Chantal for the Reid family, from Nuneaton, Warwickshire, has raised more than £10,830 so far.

She wrote: "On behalf of myself and my family I would like to thank you all for donating we really appreciate all the lovely messages and support that we have received over the past few days.

"As you can see we have smashed our target of £10,000, thank you all so much. We will keep the fundraiser going for a few more days as we have had people private message us to say they will donate.

"Once again we are very thankful for all donations and kind words during this sad and difficult time."

Emmy also leaves behind her 13-year-old brother Jak and nine-year-old sister Eliza.
