‘Smirking’ teen who sexually assaulted lawyer, stole cars and mugged teens jailed

A teenager who sexually assaulted a lawyer, robbed a businessman of his Mercedes and mugged several teenagers during a year long terror campaign was jailed today.

Hamza Zaman was just 17 when he embarked on his knifepoint crime rampage which left terrified victims still haunted by their ordeals three years on.

He was arrested by police investigating a series of sexual assaults carried out by a lad on a bicycle who targeted lone females and molested them near Zaman's home in Firswood, near Manchester.

Zaman later admitted to one of the sexual assaults on a solicitor who told how she was ambushed by a "smirking boy on a bike" as she waited at the Old Trafford Metro-link stop.

He also hijacked a Mercedes E240 at knifepoint while taking it for a test drive.

In a second raid he throttled another motorist with his own scarf and took his VW Polo.

Zaman also targeted schoolboys for their bikes or mobile phones.

At Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester, Zaman, now 20, was locked up for seven and a half years after he admitted sexual assault, robbery, attempted robbery and witness intimidation between June 2017 and May 2018.

He was also ordered to sign the Sex offender Register for seven years.

He had no history of previous offending and blamed his behaviour on the death of his grandfather.

Sentencing Zaman, Judge Bernadette Baxter told him: "You showed no regard for your victims or for the rule of law.

"You did what you wanted when you wanted without thought of the consequences.

The first incident occurred at 11.50pm in June 2017 after a 15-year old boy was targeted by Zaman.

During the mugging of the teenager, Zaman threatened to "f*** him up" and punched him in the face before escaping with his bike.

The victim told his father who, despite having recently undergone a heart transplant operation, tracked down Zaman.

The teenager made a gun gesture and warned the dad: "I'm going to f*** you up and I'm going to f*** your wife."

The following month three friends aged between 15 and 16 were walking through Chorlton-cum-Hardy when they were accosted by Zaman and his gang.

The victims were ordered to hand over their mobile phones.

Then in February 2018, Zaman robbed a student of his rucksack and beat him up as he was walking home late at night.

The Mercedes driver was carjacked by the offender after he advertised the vehicle for sale on Gumtree.

Zaman and an accomplice turned up after asking to take the car for a test drive.

During the journey he held a knife up to the victim's face close to his right eye and threatened to 'cut' him up,

The man pleaded with his attackers to take the car.

The pair escaped with the vehicle after agreeing to let the victim out.

Two weeks later, another driver who advertised his VW Polo on Auto Trader was choked with his scarf and beaten with a spanner after agreeing to let Zaman and the same accomplice test drive the vehicle.

The victim managed to grab the keys to the ignition before feeling.

In May 2018 the lawyer, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was targeted after she left work at 8pm.

Neil Usher prosecuting said: "She walked to the Old Trafford tram station when she felt Zaman slap her bottom.

"She froze and saw him on his bike and the saw him brush his hand on her upper arm.

"She was panicking as no one else was around and she described how he was cycling alongside her her at a very slow pace looking at her.

"She became angry and told him in no uncertain terms where to go but he just smirked and cycled off."

Police arrested Zaman after officers working with council officials recognised him on CCTV.

He denied two other sexual assaults upon different lone women and those charges were ordered to lie on file.

Brendan O'Leary, mitigating, said: "His father has suffered a significant mental illness and is clearly unwell and that is due to the pressure of his son's position.

"My client has to bear that responsibility and he does so in the knowledge that not only are there victims of his crimes but there are also indirect victims too.

He was a well adjusted young man but the loss of his grandfather just prior to these offences was perhaps the trigger for the change in his behaviour.

"This is not a young man who has been a tearaway for all his life."

Adnan Chobaki, also 20, of Whalley Range, Manchester was locked up for three years after admitting robbery and attempted robbery.
