Dramatic footage has emerged of the moment a 24-year-old woman who was trapped in her sinking SUV was miraculously saved from drowning in a freezing river.

The footage shows a police officer heroically diving into the embankment in Ohio, US, to rescue the desperate woman, who ended up in the river when she went off track after reportedly falling asleep on her way back from work.

The ordeal is understood to have begun when the woman, said to have children, called 911 as she realised she had landed in the waters of the Mahoning river in the city of Alliance.

“The water is like coming beneath my feet and I don’t, I’m really scared right now. I don’t know how to get out of my car,” ABC News 5 Cleveland reports the woman saying to a cop.

In the video of the rescue posted by the police force on Facebook the brave cop can be heard saying "I can't breathe" as he momentarily panics while trying to approach the woman in the freezing waters. At that point, the whole front of the SUV had already submerged.

His colleague reassures him saying he is there to support before he manages to recompose and proceeds to breaking the back window of the SUV with a hammer.

The woman then climbed out and held on to the officer as he dragged her out of the water.

Patrolman Christian Tussey, the officer who broke the window, was quoted saying by ABC News 5 Cleveland: "I knew that that window was going eventually, fortunately, it went the second time and I was very excited, and she came right out and I was able to carry her to land."

"I believe she lives in Sebring. Her car was almost full of water when the officers pulled her out of the river," police Lt. Dave Bair said, local newspaper The Repository reports.

"They communicated well and got her out of the vehicle. If these officers had been late by 30 seconds, I don't know if she would be here."

The woman is said to have been taken to hospital with minor face injuries but has since been discharged.

Mr Bair said it was a miracle all parties managed to escape the incident without serious complications to their health.

"You can die pretty quickly in cold water by hypothermia. That water is 40 degrees right now, Mr Bair said.
