Peter Sawkins hopes his Bake Off win puts him in the mix for a lucrative career in the kitchen – but he is concentrating on his studies first.

His Instagram account Peter Bakes now has more than 110,000 followers, and a record-breaking Channel 4 audience of up to 10.4 million saw his win.

But while he may one day become a cookbook writer and celebrity chef, his first priority is finishing university. The finance student, 20, said: “I am studying at Edinburgh University, and it’s my third year in a four-year degree.

“I’m looking forward to baking a few things at a relaxed pace for friends and family who won’t be scrutinising quite as closely as the judges.

“I don’t know what will come out of this but I hope there are a few fun opportunities that I can take up!”

Dave Friday, who some viewers felt deserved to win, said: “I hope to have a career in baking, specifically to get into sugar work and chocolate sculpting.”

And Laura Adlington hopes to be a TV baking star too. She said: “The ultimate dream is to develop my own recipes to showcase my love of proper, made-from-the-heart, comfort food. Baking with Holly and Phil on This Morning is also on my bucket list.”

A show source said Peter would be most in demand – but would not let his studies suffer. They said: “He is down to earth and very level-headed for his age.”
