Jose Mourinho says he "feels sorry" for Toby Alderweireld after the Belgian suffered what his manager thinks could be a serious injury in Tottenham's win over Manchester City.

Spurs were terrific in their 2-0 victory over Pep Guardiola's side, with Son Heung-min opening the scoring early on and substitute Giovani Lo Celso adding a second in the second period.

On an impressive day for the hosts, Alderweireld's late injury served as the only black mark after he pulled up with a groin problem in the 81st minute.

The Belgian international was treated on the pitch before being replaced by Wales international Joe Rodon.

Mourinho told Sky Sports after the match: "I just feel sorry for Toby, because it was a fantastic performance. He has an important injury."

When asked if it was potentially a long-term problem, the Portuguese replied: "I would say so."

Mourinho was also asked if he felt that his side had what it takes to win the Premier League having seen off the champions from 2018 and 2019, but he stopped shot of making any title predictions.

"It feels good [to be top], but maybe tomorrow we are second again and honestly that would not be a problem for me, I am just happy with the evolution.

"People cannot expect us to come here and after one season we are fighting for the title. We are not fighting for the title, we are just fighting to win every match. But we are going to lose matches, we are going to draw matches.

“But dinner tonight will be nice and relaxed and I will watch Atletico Madrid v Barcelona and sleep like an angel.

"But no problem if Leicester wins [tomorrow] and we are second again.”
