Police are hunting a shooter after multiple people were reportedly shot at a shopping centre in America.

Several people have been shot at the complex in Wauwatosa, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

None of the victims' injuries appear to be life-threatening and they are being taken to the hospital, Wauwatosa Mayor Dennis McBride told ABC News.

A shooter is "at large", according to the mayor.

Local news reports said that officers were responding to a "very active situation" and a number of people were taken away in ambulances.

The shopping centre has reportedly been placed on lockdown and people inside given a warning to "shelter in place".

Photos and video from the scene show a large number of police officers at the mall.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Wauwatosa Police, and the Wisconsin National Guard are all in attendance, reports say.

Back in February, Mayfair Mall was the site of a shooting in which a police officer shot and killed Alvin Cole, a black 17-year-old, Sky News reports.

Officers claimed Cole was fleeing from police. Police officer Joseph Mensah, who is also black, said he shot Cole because Cole pointed a gun at him.
