Mikel Arteta insists he is pleased with Thomas Partey’s progress from the “significant” injury suffered against Aston Villa.

But while he hopes to have the summer signing from Atletico Madrid back soon, the Ghanaian will play no part at Leeds this weekend.

Partey, 27, was replaced at half-time in the 3-0 loss to Villa before the international break with a thigh strain in his left leg.

Arteta had initially been optimistic that Partey would be OK to return against the Whites.

Instead, he will continue to be assessed by medical staff and continue his rehab.

Speaking on Friday, Arteta said: “He had an injury very early in the game, he wanted to continue the second half.

“We knew it was a significant injury. He's done very well and he's working very hard, he wants to be available.

“Hopefully we can get him back soon but it's an area we need to be careful and we need to be protective with the player.”

Mohamed Elneny and Sead Kolasinac are both on the sidelines this weekend also, with both currently following Covid-19 protocols after testing positive while on international duty.

Arsenal have confirmed that both players are asymptomatic.

Arteta also detailed his conversation with Willian, following his recent trip to Dubai.

Despite the UK’s current lockdown restrictions preventing people from any ‘non-essential travel’ abroad, the 32-year-old headed to the Middle East, leading to an investigation from the club into the reasons behind his trip and, ultimately, a reprimand from his manager.

Arteta said: “Whatever happens internally with any issues or things we don't expect we try to resolve them internally. That's been dealt with, explained and we move on.

“I had a conversation with him and explained what I was expecting.

"There are a lot of personal factors at the moment from our side we need to be their shoes. A lot of players are having different issues like any public person out there. Sometimes they're making decisions based on the needs, different moments or what people are expecting from them.

“Whether they're right or wrong that's something we have to discuss but it's been dealt in the right way and let's move on.”
