A video shows the terrifying moment a stranger pushes a woman onto the tracks seconds before a train arrives at the platform on the New York subway.

A surveillance video, which was shared to Twitter on Thursday afternoon, shows the attacker pacing up and down about 15 seconds before running at the woman and shoving her onto the tracks.

Moments later a train pulls in and one man can be seen turning away with his hands on his head as the woman remains on the tracks.

In a heart-stopping moment the train comes to a halt over the top of the woman.

Andre Gunter, a witness on the platform when the woman was pushed, told news outlet WCBS-TV: "I was in front, and then the next thing you kind of see somebody like falling on the track.

“Then in a couple of seconds, the conductor stopped the train. This was before we even pulled up 100 percent. Then he came out, like traumatised, he was like, 'That was a person.'"

The victim, a woman in her 40s, suffered "very minor injuries".

The man then pushes the victim and she can be seen on the tracks just moments before a train pulls in

Transit Chief Kathleen O’Reilly, speaking at a press conference after the attack, said: “She fell, fortunately for her, between the row bed and the rails.

“Very minor injuries but for the grace of God."

O'Reilly added that the attack at the 14th Street-Union Square station was particularly disturbing because "the perpetrator has no contact with the victim" before striking out.

The suspect was caught by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and then arrested by nearby police officers.

The woman was taken to Bellevue Hospital as she had cuts on her head, but then she returned home later that day, according to WCBS.
