I'm A Celebrity hosts Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnelly recalled the horror of a particularly painful PJ & Duncan gig early in their careers.

The Geordie duo, who were once a pop act named after their Byker Grove characters, laughed as they joked about new arrivals Ruthie Henshall and Russell Watson being pelted with rotten tomatoes while standing on stage and dancing in front of their campmates.

Ant suggested he had no idea what that would feel like when Dec reminded him of an excruciating performance his mind has "blocked out".

Ant said: "Well done to Russell and Ruthie for getting through that trial.

"What must is be like standing on a stage in stupid outfits, doing ridiculous dance moves, covered in rotten tomatoes?"

Dec responded: "You've obviously blocked out the first ever PJ & Duncan tour."

"Ah yes," Ant recalled. "Glasgow."

The lads could have been referring to their gig in Glasgow in 1996, which saw them get a pretty terrible review in Scottish newspaper The Herald.

The reviewer said they had done their research and were "looking forward to the prospect of two young men, barely out of their teens, giving the girls some pelvis action from a safe distance".

They added: "What 'they' didn't say was that multiple wisdom tooth removal would be less painful. And that was before they came on."

The reviewer said they were on the boys' side and that they were "good performers" and "cute" so it didn't matter if they weren't singing all the time.

But there was one song they weren't fond of at all.

They penned: "Then they go on to murder the most marvellous Monkees tune ever – Stepping Stone (their new single). The magic is spoiled and no amount of cute grins and cheesy ballads can compensate for such a heinous crime."

It wasn't all bad for PJ & Duncan though.
