Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan did not hold back, as he grilled Business Secretary Alok Sharma over the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Government ministers had boycotted GMB for the past six months, but this week saw them slowly make their return to the show.

Following Matt Hancock and Robert Jenrick's own appearances earlier this week, Wednesday was the turn of Sharma to get a grilling.

It wasn't long before things got slightly heated, as the pair spoke over each other during the ITV interview.

Piers wanted answers on Covid testing, true death figures in the UK and the potential of a lockdown break at Christmas.

But he and co-host Susanna Reid weren't happy with some of the answers, or lack of, they were getting.

Piers asked "what the government were hiding" repeatedly after echoing new claims from the Financial Times Economics editor that the true death toll in the UK could be around 75,000 and not the 52,000 revealed by the government.

Susanna also questioned the "metric" used by the government with their figures, suggesting it might not reflect the truth.

Piers soon moved on to testing, and quickly grew frustrated with Sharma who didn't answer his "simple question".

He asked him about earlier claims that the government were "prepared" for the pandemic, and that testing capacity was increasing.

Given the UK death toll, which is said to be the highest in Europe, Piers grilled Sharma over how they could possibly have been as prepared as they had claimed.

But it's when Piers asked how many people were currently being tested, that he was left laying into the MP on air.

Sharma began talking figures, with Piers quickly interrupting: "That wasn’t the question… I didn't ask about capacity.

"I asked a simple question which I know you have struggled with in the past to answer honestly and accurately."

Piers proceeded to ask again and again, wanting the figures, but the GMB guest continued to miss the question – leading to Piers telling him "he didn't know the answer".

He said: "Let's move on… the answer is you don’t know right? You do this a lot with respect… you answer a completely different question."

Sharma denied this, claiming Piers simply didn't like his answer before claiming capacity had increased and that the latest updates were a positive.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
