Former BBC Radio One DJ Charlie Sloth has been slammed over a "PR stunt" in which he seemingly posted a picture of a £200,000 drinks bill from a bar in Dubai.

The star, who also presented shows on BBC Radio 1Xtra, appeared to take a picture of his receipt from a night out at the Five Palm Jumeirah hotel's bar The Penthouse.

Sloth, who DJs at the bar, is said to have bought 53 bottles of Champagne, two bottles of tequila, a bottle of vodka, and a bottle of cognac as well as some Japanese food.

The bill came to an eye-watering total of 1,014, 973 Dirham or £208,453.53.

Posting a picture of the receipt on Instagram, he declared he had been "showing off".

Sloth wrote: "When flexing and showing off goes wrong… DD14 1 MILLION AED @[email protected]  do you do credit?"

Bosses at the club then joked he has "a lot of dishes to wash".

In a comment, The Penthouse's account posted: "Sorry Charlie. You know we don’t give credit we’ve been through this… please can you come to our head office as the CEO needs to speak to you urgently about your outstanding bill.  #ThatsAlotOfDishesToWash."

However, some of the star's followers claimed the post was actually a PR stunt for the club where he works.

Eagle-eyed fans spotted the bill had been started at 18:47 and closed less than 10 minutes later – leaving not enough time for the star to guzzle that much booze.

One wrote: "Good PR stunt , you almost had us of it wasn't for the fact that the bill was opened at 6:47 pm and closed at 6:56pm.. 9 minutes will get you alot of PR."

Others claimed it was in poor taste considering so many people across the world are suffering financial hardship due to the coronavirus pandemic.

One commented: "U think that this PR stunt is funny in the time that ppl are losing their jobs and some families are sufferin? Its bcoz of places like this that Dubai sometimes gets a bad rep !!!"

Another added: "I’m not sure what it worse, the fact that you guys are in on this with  @charliesloth  , or the fact that you actually commented and had no thoughts or reaction on forging and scamming.

"What a way to display scam to people. Bill duration was only 9 minutes (opened at 18:47 PM and closed at 18:56 PM) proving this was just for show and marketing.

"This is very bad for your image and a desperate act for getting attention. Shame."

One more wrote: "It's all fake, publicity stunt by the DJ and the Lounge".

Another follower commented: "This isn’t good energy your puttin out there right now some people didn’t eat today a lot of hungry stomachs and evil eyes looking at this right now remember most your audience broke Charlie."
