The fourth season of The Crown has arrived with events moving steadily from 1979 into the 1980s.

The Netflix drama will see many from the cast of the third season return, including Oscar winner Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II, who finds herself clashing with her new prime minister, Margaret Thatcher (Gillian Anderson).

Elsewhere, heir to the throne Prince Charles, played by a returning Josh O'Connor, decides to finally settle down and chooses the sweet but vulnerable Lady Diana Spencer, played by newcomer Emma Corrin.

However, as the fairytale wedding arrives, it becomes abundantly clear that the pair will not make a happy couple together.

Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II

Colman returns as the British monarch and head of the Commonwealth who faces both personal and monarchical crises.

The actress is best known for her Oscar-winning role in The Favourite, along with other films such as Tyrannosaur and The Iron Lady, plus television roles such as Peep Show and Fleabag.

Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

Menzies is back as the now steadfast husband of the monarch who is dealt a harsh family blow.

The actor is a veteran of costume dramas such as Game of Thrones, Outlander, and Rome, whilst also popping up in James Bond film Casino Royale.

Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon

Bonham Carter returns as the Queen’s younger sister provides support for her but finds herself plagued with both physical and mental health issues.

Having had an illustrious film career, Bonham Carter is best known for roles in the Harry Potter film series, The King's Speech, Fight Club, her work with director Tim Burton, and many more.

Gillian Anderson as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher

Anderson joins the cast as the new Conservative prime minister who becomes increasingly controversial while in office and clashes with The Queen.

Having found fame as Agent Scully in The X Files, Anderson has gone on to have an acclaimed career on stage and screen with recent roles including Sex Education on Netflix and All About Eve on stage in the West End.

Josh O’Connor as Charles, Prince of Wales

O'Connor portrays troubled heir to the throne who tries to place duty over love.

Following his breakout role in God's Own Country, O'Connor has appeared in film roles such as EMMA. and Only You.

Emma Corrin as Lady Diana Spencer, later Diana, Princess of Wales

The charming, young, but vulnerable future bride of the Prince of Wales is portrayed by newcomer Emma Corrin.

The actress previously had a supporting role in the DC Comics series Pennyworth.

Marion Bailey as Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother

Bailey returns as the mother of the monarch who was once the wife of the King, but still has her own family secrets.

Best known for her work with partner and director Mike Leigh, Bailey has appeared in films such as Meantime, All or Nothing, Vera Drake, Mr. Turner, and Peterloo.

Erin Doherty as Princess Anne

Rising star Doherty plays the only daughter of the Queen and Prince Philip and a confidante to Charles who is now unhappily married.

Outside of The Crown, Doherty had small roles in Call the Midwife and the BBC's Les Miserables.

Emerald Fennell as Camilla Parker Bowles

Fennell returns as the now-married love of Charles’ life who he remains incredibly close to.

The actress is best known for her central role in Call the Midwife and film appearances including in Vita & Virginia, but she also acted as the lead writer on the second season of Killing Eve and her directorial debut Promising Young Woman, starring Carey Mulligan, has received political campaign.

Stephen Boxer as Denis Thatcher

Boxer portrays the supportive husband of the Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and the father of their children, Mark and Carol.

The actor has had a lengthy career on stage and screen, with television projects including Prime Suspect, A Royal Scandal, and Garrow's Law.

Charles Dance as Louis Mountbatten, Earl Mountbatten of Burma

Dance reprises his role as Lord Mountbatten, a British military veteran who is the elder statesman of the Royal Family known as 'Uncle Dickie'. He is the maternal uncle of Prince Philip and a mentor and surrogate father to Philip's son Charles.

A veteran film and television actors, Dance's most high profile roles include parts in Game of Thrones, Alien3, Terry Pratchett's Going Postal, and The Imitation Game.

Tom Brooke as Michael Fagan

Brooke portrays a struggling working class man who breaks into Buckingham Palace to speak with The Queen.

The actor is best known for his television roles in Sherlock, Bodyguard, and Preacher, having also appeared in the film The Boat That Rocked.

Richard Roxburgh as Prime Minister Bob Hawke

Australian actor Roxburgh portrays the Australian prime minister with republicans sentiments who meets Charles and Diana on their visit to his nation.

Roxburgh is best known for his roles in Moulin Rouge, The League of Extraordinary Gentleman, Van Helsing, and Mission: Impossible 2.

Tom Burke as Derek ‘Dazzle’ Jennings

Strike star Burke portrays a civil servant and close friend of Princess Margaret who seeks a future in the Catholic Church.

Nicholas Farrell as Michael Shea

Farrell portrays an author and leading press secretary for The Queen during a potential constitutional crisis.

The British actor is best known for his roles in Chariots of Fire, Torchwood, Spooks, and The Iron Lady.

Edwards reprises his role as The Queen's private secretary who has served her since her time as a Princess.

Outside of The Crown, Edwards has had roles in TV series such as Downton Abbey and Sherlock, along with film parts in Diana and The Witches.

Richard Goulding as Edward Adeane

Goulding portrays the private secretary of the Prince of Wales who clashes with Diana.

The British actor has also had roles in Brexit: The Uncivil War, The Iron Lady, The Windsors, and King Charles III.

Georgie Glen as Ruth, Lady Fermoy

The Scottish actress plays the stern maternal grandmother of Diana and close friend and lady-in-waiting of the Queen Mother.

Glen's film roles include Amazing Grace and Jackie, while she has also appeared in television series such as Little Britain, Heartbeat, Waterloo Road, and Call the Midwife.

Tom Byrne as Prince Andrew

Newcomer Byrne joins the cast as the second son of The Queen and Prince Philip, who close to his mother and keen for glory.

The series depicts Andrew's marriage to Sarah Ferguson and also shows friction with elder brother Prince Charles.

Angus Imrie as Prince Edward

Imrie joins the cast as the youngest child of The Queen and Prince Philip who is facing a difficult time at school.

The British actor and son of Celia Imrie has had previous roles in television series like Fleabag and The Spanish Princess, whilst also having film parts in EMMA. and The Kid Who Would Be King.

Paul Jesson as Sir Geoffrey Howe

Jesson portrays the longest-serving cabinet minister under Margaret Thatcher’s premiership.

A veteran thespian and Shakespearean actor, Jesson has also appeared in Mike Leigh's Mr. Turner and Ralph Fiennes' Coriolanus.

Andrew Buchan as Andrew Parker Bowles

Buchan reprises his role as the husband of Camilla and the former lover of Princess Anne.

In addition to The Crown, Buchan appeared in the crime drama Broadchurch alongside Olivia Colman, and also has had roles in Party Favours and recently played Sir Thomas More in The Spanish Princess.

Freddie Fox as Mark Thatcher

Fox portrays the role of the only son and favourite child of Margaret Thatcher.

A scion of the Fox acting dynasty, Freddie has appeared in acclaimed TV series White House Farm and Cucumber, along with film roles in The Riot Club and Fanny Lye Deliver'd.

Rebecca Humphries as Carol Thatcher

Humphries portrays the role of Carol, a journalist and only daughter of Margaret Thatcher.

The actress is best known for her roles in the likes of Friday Night Dinner, whilst also for previously dating comedian Seann Walsh.

Geoffrey Breton as Captain Mark Phillips

Breton portrays Princess Anne’s husband and father of her children.

The actor has previously had small television roles in the likes of Doctors and Hollyoaks Later.

Penny Downie as Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester

Downie reprises her role as the Queen’s aunt by marriage and a regular fixture at family gatherings.

The Australian actress has previously had roles in Downton Abbey, Jackie, and Clint Eastwood film Invictus.

Eadie joins the cast as Diana’s older sister and one-time love interest of Prince Charles, Lady Sarah.

The actress has also done voice work in the film Rocketman.

Daniel Donskoy as Major James Hewitt

Donskoy joins the cast as the one-time lover of the Princess of Wales.

The German actor has previously had roles in Detectorists, Casualty, and HBO's Strike Back.

Jessica Aquilina as Sarah Ferguson

The newcomer portrays the fiancée of Prince Andrew.

She is later seen married to the Prince and has the title of the Duchess of York.
