Most towns and cities in England have seen a week-on-week rise in coronavirus infections, alarming new data shows.

Figures from Public Health England reveal that 221 of 315 local authority areas saw a rise in cases in the seven days to Monday.

This comes despite millions of people having lived under raised local lockdown restrictions for months.

But there is cause for optimism, with six of England's 10 worst hotspots recording a drop in the number of new cases.

Hull now has the country's highest infection rate, with 1,931 new cases identified in seven days, followed by Blackburn with Darwen.

Oldham, which was unceremoniously dumped into Tier 3 by the government last month, is in third place.

Earlier today analysis from the government's SAGE committee suggested the reproduction (R) number has fallen slightly to between 1 and 1.2 across the UK – but warned deaths will keep rising.

Scientists say infections are likely to increase again in December if lockdowns are lifted everywhere.

Sage warned that the virus is still spreading and deaths and demand for healthcare will carry on unless R drops below one for an extended period of time.

In its latest weekly R announcement, SAGE said: “The estimated growth rate means the number of new infections is growing by between 1% and 3% every day.

"Sage is confident that the epidemic has continued to grow in England over recent weeks.

"Although there is some evidence that the rate of growth in some parts of the country may be slowing, levels of disease are very high in these areas; significant levels of healthcare demand and mortality will persist until R is reduced to and remains well below one for an extended period of time."

The UK's coronavirus death toll today rose by 376, with a further 27,301 people testing positive for the virus in 24 hours.

The heartbreaking figure was released after the number of lives lost to the virus passed 50,000 this week, making the UK the fifth country to pass the grim milestone.

The latest casualties bring the number of coronavirus victims since the start of the pandemic to 51,304.
