On August 31, 1997, the royal family changed forever.

Princess Diana was involved in a catstrophic car accident while on holiday with her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed.

Dodi and the driver Henri Paul, were killed instantly – but Diana was rushed to hospital where medics desperately tried to save her.

There was nothing they could do and at 4am Princess Diana was pronounced dead.

Prince Charles , who was on holiday with the Queen and his sons William and Harry, was the first to be told about his ex-wife’s death.

He was devastated – and knew both he and the royal family would be blamed.

Tina Brown, author of The Diana Chronicles, said: "Charles absolutely fell apart.

"He instantly knew this was a terrible thing, that he would be blamed, that they would be blamed, for the death of Diana."

Both the Queen and Prince Charles agreed on one thing – Prince William and Prince Harry would be their main priority.

Journalist and friend of the princess, Richard Kay: told Channel 5 documentary, Diana: 7 Days That Shock: "The Queen’s view was that the boys were their main priority.

"They took the decision they wouldn’t wake William and Harry and would wait until they woke up in the morning to tell them."

This would be one of the few things the Queen and her son were to agree on following Diana’s death.

Richard said: "Charles took the decision that he was going to Paris to bring back Diana’s body.

They were greeted by French President Jacques Chirac

"This was a surprising and brave move. He was an ex-husband, he had no right to be there other than as the father of her sons.

"Charles wanted to take the royal flight to Paris but the Queen wouldn’t allow it.

"Charles fought harder for Diana than he had ever fought for her in her lifetime."

The Prince of Wales refused to back down and eventually the Queen agreed to allow him to fly on the royal plane to bring his ex-wife’s body back to Britain.

The following morning, Charles, William and Harry, along with the rest of the royal family attended church at Balmoral before he took the royal plane to France with Diana’s sisters, Jane and Sarah.

When he arrived at the hospital he was met by President Jacques Chirac.

Princess Diana’s former butler, Paul Burrell, was already at the hospital with some of her other closest members of staff.

He told Channel 5: "He was devastated. This as a woman he had loved in his own way."

Charles has later described arriving at the hospital as one of the worst experiences of his life.

The prince agreed for Diana’s coffin to be draped with the royal standard when it was removed from the hospital.

This was a touching tribute to his wife, who had been stripped of her royal titles following her divorce.

Just 16 hours after her death, the plane carrying Princess Diana’s body touched down at RAF Northolt in Norfolk.

She was finally home.

Dubbed the People’s Princess following the tragedy, Diana’s death sparked a period of huge national grief.

A sea of flowers was left outside Buckingham Palace and  her funeral at Westminster Abbey was watched by 2.5billion people across the world.

The royal family were heavily criticised following the tragic events on Augst 31, 1997.

And Prince Harry has admitted his mother’s death when he was just 12 led to a period of severe depression and grief.

Both her sons have talked about the deep imapact losing their mother at such a young age had on them both.

They have now lost a huge mental health project – and so Princess Diana’s legacy lives on.
