Lonnie Donegan’s son reveals truth on The Voice ‘fix’ – but he’s labelled ‘liar’

Lonnie Donegan’s son has revealed the truth about his The Voice performance after ‘fix’ claims.

Last weekend’s opening episode was rocked by the scandal after Peter Donegan’s secret connections were revealed.

Sir Tom Jones was stunned when he spun round on his chair and discovered the singer was the son of his old friend, Lonnie, before performing an impromptu duet.

The touching moment was lost on some viewers, who voiced their displeasure at Peter’s link to Sir Tom.

Speaking on today’s This Morning, Peter hit back at the ‘fix’ claims and claimed it was recorded live.

When asked what he would say to those claiming it was ‘set up’, Peter replied: "I’m not allowed to say it at this time of day.

"Basically there’s no way. Everything you saw was recorded live and happened in the space of 20 minutes. From me coming on, getting ready, and singing the song.

"When he [Sir Tom] asked ‘do you want to do your dad’s song’ I was completely taken aback by it."

Peter won a place in the next round and became a member of Team Tom.

Later in the interview, unprompted, he brought up the ‘fix’ allegations once again.

Peter said: "If anyone is ever in doubt about that clip look at my mother’s reaction.

"I’d never met Tom before that night. The first time we set eyes one each other was that night."

Some viewers were not convinced and insisted something fishy went on.

One angry viewer said: "So obviously set up. So the producers didn’t know you were Lonnie Donegan’s son? F*** off. #stickitupyoura*** you f***ing liar."

Another added: "When a contestants family connections overshadows a public entry competition they should be withdrawn."

A third joked: "The Tom Jones & Peter Donegan moment was fabulous and utter TV gold, oh, and so well rehearsed!"

However, one fan defended them: "It was such a magical moment! One of my favourite moments on TV! It was not set up! I’ve been to the Voice a few times, there is no way it’s set up!"

The legend had a string of hits in the 50s and 60s and became a strong influence to 1960s British pop musicains.

The Welsh legend managed to secure the services of Peter for his team as he progressed through the blind audition stage.

The pair then sang an impromptu duet Never Gonna Fall In Love Again, written by Lonnie and released by Sir Tom in 1967.

Sir Tom, 78, said: “I couldn’t believe it. Never Gonna Fall In Love Again is a song that I still do in my act.

“It was quite emotional singing it. A couple of the notes I couldn’t get out. It just stuck in my throat.”
