Who Want to Be a Millionaire contestant loses £93k after audience error

A contestant on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire lost out on £93k when the studio audience gave him an incorrect answer.

Oli from Canterbury was sat in the hot seat just one question away from £250,000 when things went spectacularly wrong.

During Saturday night’s show, host Jeremy Clarkson asked him: "3 May. Bistritz. Left Munich at 8:35PM are the opening words to which novel?"

The four options were revealed as Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Dracula, Heart of Darkness or Franeknstein.

A baffled Oli admitted he hadn’t read any of the four novels and decided to use a lifeline to help him out.

Opting to ask the audience, Oli was relieved when 81 per cent predicted the correct answer was Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

"If you get it right you’ve got a quarter of a million and you’re two questions from the big one," said host Jeremy.

Oli decided not to walk away with his £125,000 but to go with the majority of the audience.

But their answer sadly left him crashing out of the competition.

Quizmaster Jeremy responded: "It’s the wrong answer. What an absolute nightmare, it’s Dracula."

Despite losing £93k, Oli didn’t appear too crushed, saying "It’s something I now know."

It wasn’t all bad news as Oli went home with a not-too-shabby £32,000 instead.
