Luther season 4 plot recap: What happened in Luther’s last episode as show returns to BBC1

Luther is back for season five (finally!) on the BBC.

We last saw the detective back in 2015 for season four, which saw Luther return from a two year break.

In a two episode story there were flashbacks to DS Justin Ripley’s (Warren Brown) death to remind us it’s always personal with Luther.

In London, a killer started off his spree by killing a woman home alone – the main story centered around a cannibal killer who had Cotard Syndrome, a rare mental illness in which the affected person holds the delusional belief that they are already dead.

Luther was also haunted by his miscarriage, something which we see echoed in the plot about the missing boy killed by his classmate in an old case.

After three seasons of horror – and seeing his loved ones die – Luther threw away his coat.

His connection with Alice (Ruth Wilson) also showed us a darker side of his personality.

So what happened?

The department continued to fail him and after Ripley’s death, Luther put that aside to investigate Alice’s death (we’ll come back to this don’t worry).

He got called in by his boss Martin Schenk to help catch a serial killer who ate his victims’ organs.

Theo was also been blow apart by the killer.

Donning his famous grey coat we knew he was back. From then he was hunted by bounty killers and George Cornelius (Patrick Malahide) put a price on his head for chaining him up to a radiator.

Alice’s ‘killer’

Luther was told about Alice’s death, leading to his abduction of gangster George Cornelius, who was allegedly responsible for her murder.

Luther hunted Alice’s killer – and tried to find out what happened to her. He dealt with a so-called clairvoyant (Laura Haddock).

All the victims had spy-ware installed by Steven Rose but when Luther leads a raid on Rose’s house it was empty and Luther saw Rose escaping.

Then a young woman brought him a message from Alice.

Alice wasn’t really dead…

We’ve also seen Alice in season five’s trailer.

Emma

Luther also got a new partner, Emma (Rose Leslie), who he made promise to stick to the rules.

She bends the rules though, because, well, she works with Luther.

We have a new partner again for season five.
