Another series of Great British Bake Off has been and gone.
It’s the most popular cooking show on TV, but how do you get on it?
Do you have what it takes to make it in the tent? To get the famous Hollywood handshake?
Well here’s how you can apply – and top tips to make the cut. Be warned it’s a lengthy process and you have to commit to filming days if you get through, but it’s worth it right?
How to apply for Great British Bake Off
The ninth series of GBBO is in full swing, so unfortunately applications are closed for this series. If you’re thinking of applying for the next series then here’s your guide to the process.
The GBBO website says applicants are notified by March before the series airs.
Applications tend to open in October and run through until January. If you want to apply for 2019 then head over to gbbo.take-part.co.uk.
You can apply on the special website.

The site says: "Are you bonkers about baking? If you find yourself surrounded by rolling pins, scales, wooden spoons and measuring cups on a regular basis, and have noticed that you’re almost always coated in a fine layer of flour, you might be ready to take your talent to the next level by going on the Bake Off. “Being one of the bakers means being part of the GBBO family, with Prue and Paul at the helm, Sandi and Noel cheering you on, and every other baker by your side.”
What is the criteria?
For past series you needed to match the following criteria:
- Be over the age of 16
- Be a resident of the UK
- Have never worked as a full-time baker, cook or chef
- Do not have an NVQ or qualification in baking, cooking, food production, catering or food prep, unless it’s more than ten years ago.
- Be able to commit to all filming days – the days are confirmed once applications are successful
- Not be closely related to a member of Channel 4 or Love Productions – or others involved in the programme
You can complete the form online or downloaded and completed in writing.

What’s on the application form?
Sixth series baker Mat Riley said the application is a long process.
He completed his form before Christmas and filming started in May.
According to Mat, the form is four to five pages long full of questions asking about everything from technical things about the bakes to people’s interests.
You also need to send in photos of you bakes.

How does the selection process work?
Once you fill in the form, you may get a phone call. You chat with the team on the phone and then pop along to meet the production team.
You have to bake for them for the “audition day” – you are put in a commercial kitchen and given a blind technical challenge.
They’re looking at whether you can bake and how you react to being on camera.
What happens if I get through?
After the audition the production team then select the final bakers and ring them.
Jordan Cox, from series five, said it felt like “forever’ until he got the call.
It was about six weeks after the audition.
