Coronation Street viewers noticed the poignant timing of the death of Audrey Roberts’ love interest the dastardly Lewis Archer on New Year’s Day.
It was a tragic ending for the conman as his partner Audrey and daughter Gail Rodwell found him collapsed and clutching what appeared to be an engagement ring.
Instead of planning to con Audrey again it seems he really was in love with her and was planning to pop the question.
Fans pointed out the doubly tragic twist that it was 20 years to the day since Audrey’s late husband Alf died.

Mark Campbell tweeted: "1st Alf now Lewis poor Audrey doesn’t have much luck with fellas at new year."
And another Corrie watcher wrote: "Twenty years to the day since Alfie died, not a good date for Audrey Roberts."
Instead of planning to con Audrey again it seems he really was in love with her and was planning to pop the question, the old smoothie.
But some fans are wondering if Lewis could actually have been up to his old conniving tricks after all.

One Corrie viewer said: "Well I wasn’t expecting that. I bet Lewis stole Audrey’s money beforehand though."
And viewer Sam Martin speculated he could now even be faking his own death.
Sam said: "Lewis is faking his own death. It did say d-day in his diary."
Lewis, played by Nigel Havers, first arrived in Weatherfield in 2009 when mischievous Claudia Colby introduced Audrey to the former male escort at a Weatherfield Council Christmas lunch.

Encouraged by Claudia, Audrey began to use Lewis’ services and, after falling for his charm, the couple planned to run a hotel together in Greece.
But dastardly Lewis vanished on the day they were meant to fly out, leaving Audrey devastated at a party thrown for them by daughter Gail.
And there was a dramatic showdown between Gail and neighbour Deirdre Barlow when it emerged that Deirdre had kissed Lewis.
Gail let rip, launching a Manchester tart in Deirdre’s face in hilarious scenes.
Lewis turned up again two years later and this time duped Gail, plotting to take the £40,000 loan she took out against her house.
He then went on the run to Belize to escape the law.
Last year he turned up again working in cahoots with fake psychic Rosemary Piper, but Audrey was still dazzled by smooth-talking Lewis and she allowed Lewis to escape.
He then worked hard to prove he was a reformed character, but Gail was still suspicious and at Christmas followed him as he met a glamorous lady at a posh hotel.
He warned Gail off and later told Audrey that her daughter was causing him stress and that he’d visited a doctor with suspected chest pain.
