Coronation Street bosses have decided to kill off Roy Cropper’s battleaxe mum in a dramatic New Year storyline.
Roy, played by David Neilson, will receive the devastating news in a phone call as chiefs decided the death of mum Sylvia Goodwin will happen off-screen.
A show source told Daily Star : "It’s a shame she’s being bumped off like this. She was a great character and everyone loves a Corrie battleaxe."
Sylvia was last seen on the ITV soap in 2013 and actress Stephanie Cole played her mouthy role for two years.

She was described as "a cross between Boudica and Attila the Hun." Fans will remember she frowned upon Roy’s relationship with transgender hayley and enjoyed a brief romance with American buisinessman Milton Fanshaw, played by the late Hollywood star Robert Vaughn.
Sylvia was written out of the soap after Hayley’s cancer diagnosis – she was last mentioned in the soap back in 2016 when Roy said she had broken her wrists after falling down the stairs.
Her death comes after it was revealed new Corrie boss Ian MacLeod revealed a ‘newly returned villain will get the chop’ at Christmas.

Audrey Roberts will be devastated, no doubt, when he new beau, Lewis Archer, is reported to be the one who will sadly be killed of during the festive season – though at the moment it is not clear how exactly his demise will take place.
A source told The Sun : "The intense plot will play out over the New Year. Nigel always knew he wouldn’t last long on the Cobbles when he signed up to return and what a way to make an exit."
Lewis conned his girlfriend, as well as her daughter, Gail Platt, out of £40,000, which sent him to prison in the end.
But he has since sweet-talked his way back to a relationship with Audrey, depsite it causing a huge chasm between her and Gail.
According to the publication, Lewis’ sad fate will come after Peter Barlow will be caught in a terrifying boat fire in shocking scenes.
An insider said: "There’s a massive fire on a boat on the canal and Simon is inside.
“Someone raises the alarm and Peter races to rescue his son who has passed out from smoke inhalation.
“He will jump on to the burning boat and go below deck to try to get to Simon. He will manage to rescue him by throwing his lifeless body over the side and into the arms of neighbours, gathered on the side of the canal.”
Is Lewis involved in the fire that threatens the lives of the Barlows, or will someone seek to bring his scheming to an end once and for all?
