Emmerdale’s Bernice Blackstock could be "paralysed" after a Botox injection goes very badly wrong.
Actress Samantha Giles has spoken about her character’s "dangerous" cosmetic procedure that leaves her fighting for her life.
Bernice feels worried about her age due to dating Dr Cavanagh, who is about 10 years younger, as she approaches her 50th birthday.
The insecure salon owner gets Kerry to inject Botox into her forehead, but she has an allergic reaction and struggles to breathe.
Speaking about her character’s horrific ordeal, Samantha says: "She goes to hospital. She goes into an anaphylactic shock. So it’s quite dangerous. And there’s a possibility that the paralysis – you know, the swelling – is going to stay. So there is that danger."

Bernice is rushed to A&E with Kerry and Leanna at her side, while furious Dr Cavanagh slams them for being so stupid.
The doctor reveals that Bernice’s face could be permanently paralysed and she is taken to intensive care.
On whether this was supposed to be a cautionary tale, Samantha said: "I don’t think that’s been the sole aim of the story. I think it has to fit, and it just probably… it just so happened that… like her age, and the fact that she’s dating a younger man – so it just probably seemed like a great opportunity to use the story.
"It does resonate with me. I’m in my 40s. I’m in my late 40s, really, and I think that a lot of women start to feel… you do start to get more conscious of your age. You catch yourself in the mirror, and you see younger women, and you think, “Oh my God, I am getting older."
Bernice has been arguing with her sister – but will this bring them together?
"Getting older isn’t nice, for anybody. So it’s weird to think that you could put a stop to it. I don’t think it’s a very sensible thing to do. So I suppose if it highlights something out there for women, I think it’s just about feeling more positive about their own image.
"It doesn’t help that obviously we’re just given images of women all the time, aren’t we, in the media, that have got these perfect, flawless faces, with no lines at all, and they’re puffed up everywhere, and I think it looks ridiculous. But I think you can always tell when someone’s had work."
Kerry reveals that it was actually nasty Leanna who pressured Bernice into getting Botox.
It’s a bad Christmas for Bernice
This leads to a catfight between furious Gabby and rival Leanna, with Diane forced to restrain her grandaughter.
Samantha also spoke about pressures in the industry to get Botox, particularly for actors in LA.
She added: "If I was working out there, I think I would feel it. I don’t feel it that much here, because I think— I mean, I am lucky. I’ve got good skin – touch wood – but I think you’ve got to be able to move your face, haven’t you? Your lines and everything are part of telling more than what you’re saying.
"They’re about the character that’s there, and the experiences you’ve been through. So I think they’re actually really important."
