Prince William Had an Awkward Interview After His 2007 Breakup with Kate Middleton

Not even royal #CoupleGoals Prince William and Kate Middleton are safe from post-breakup awkwardness. After the pair briefly broke up in 2007, they were still under the royal spotlight, and it seemed members of the press were curious if they were still in touch. So when William had a brief press conference ahead of a Princess Diana memorial concert that summer, one reporter couldn’t help but wonder, was Kate coming?

“How are things going with Kate?” one interviewer asked the prince. Awkwardness ensued. According to footage of the interview, which was recently resurfaced by fan account @TeaCambridges, William laughed off the question, Prince Harry teased him, and singer Joss Stone (who performed at the concert and joined in for the Q&A) simply responded with, “Wow!”

This clip will never not make me laugh 😂

Here’s the interview in full:

After a bit of stuttering, Prince William gave a clever answer. “Uh, well, uh, I’ve got lots of friends coming,” he said with a laugh. “So, you know, everyone’s going to be here tonight, and it’s going to be a great night.”

In classic little brother fashion, Prince Harry couldn’t help but troll his sibling and state the obvious. “Very well avoided, William,” he unabashedly said into his mic.

William joked along. “Very diplomatic,” he said.

Kate actually did attend, just as William suggested. However, she wasn’t seated with the royal brothers in the front row; she sat a couple of rows behind them with her own family. On the other hand, Harry’s girlfriend at the time, Chelsy Davy, was spotted right next to the sibling duo.

But by the time of the concert in July 2007, there were already rumors that William and Kate had reconciled. They had reportedly parted ways months earlier, in March.
