Coronation Street actor Joe Duttine wanted to ‘protect’ Tim’s relationship with Sally
Actor Joe Duttine has admitted he wanted to protect his Coronation Street character Tim Metcalfe’s relationship with Sally.
The taxi driver is set for a hellish Christmas this year as he ends up in bed with his wife’s sister Gina – something that is set to infuriate fans.
And the soap star himself wasn’t too keen on the storyline either.
Asked how he felt after discovering about Tim’s romp with Gina, Joe says: "I wanted to protect it. As actors you put a lot of time into your character and your relationship and eventually over time you sort of nick them off the writers.
"So when new writers come along and suggest stuff you’re like ‘No you can’t do that’. So you do feel quite protective over them because you do get positive feedback and with Tim and Sally they’re a likeable couple and it would be a shame to go down that route."

But it looks like fans of the couple needn’t be too worried about their future – because Joe certainly isn’t.

"There’s some interesting stuff happening in the new year," Joe explains. "I think the Gina and Sally relationship is pretty damaged – I can’t really see how that (kind of thing) can be forgotten. So there might be changes around."
He also admits that he is hoping for some more light-hearted storylines in the near-future.

Questioned about what happened to Tim’s home brewing, he says: "Yeah, bring it back! I love all that. They’re nice characterful things. The show’s so story driven these days that character stuff slightly gets put to one side, I think.
"Yeah I don’t know what happened to the idea of that, it’s a shame – there’s still the odd nod to it where there’s a scene and someone give Tim some home brew.
"I love that taxi rank banter, I’d like to see a bit more of it and I think people would like to see a bit more of it – it’s lighthearted stuff, isn’t it.
"There needs to be a bit of light and shade and see characters taking nonsense. If you invest in the characters you’ll sit and watch them talk about wallpaper."
