Doctor Who New Year special to see Daleks battle Jodie Whittaker for first time

Doctor Who is rolling out the fan faves for the New Year’s Day special as Jodie Whittaker’s Time Lord battles the Daleks.

The iconic baddies had been banished by new showrunner Chris Chibnall, along with the Cybermen and Weeping Angels.

But they will now try to exterminate the Doctor in the hour-long special – and have had a makeover, losing the bronze look.

Fans last saw the Daleks in 2015, when they menaced Peter Capaldi in The Witch’s Familiar.

  • Doctor Who New Year’s Day special announces guest stars

Speaking before Whittaker launched as the 13th Doctor, Chibnall insisted only new villains would feature, saying: “There are no old monsters. OK?”

The New Year’s Day special will feature guest appearances from Call the Midwife’s Charlotte Richie, Indian Summer’s Nikesh Patel and Save Me’s Daniel Adegboyega. Little is known of the plot, except it involves “a terrifying evil”. It will be Doctor Who’s only outing in 2019, with Chibnall’s delayed second series now likely to air early 2020.

A hint about the return of the Daleks is expected to come in the trailer at the end of Sunday’s series finale. The BBC declined to comment last night.
