Mary Poppins legend Dick Van Dyke steals spotlight at the premiere of Disney reboot

Hollywood legend Dick van Dyke was among the stars on show at the glitzy premiere of the Mary Poppins reboot in LA.

The 92-year-old posed for pictures with British-born actress Emily Blunt, who plays the title role of Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns.

Stealing the spotlight, at one point he also broke out into a little dance.

Other stars at the red carpet bash included Brits Emily Mortimer and Ben Wishaw – who play grown-up versions of Jane and Michael Banks, the children from the 1964 classic.

Blunt sparkled in a sweeping white Yanina Couture dress as she chatted with Van Dyke, who features in the new film as the son of an ageing banker he played in the original.

Describing working with him, Blunt told Harper’s Bazaar: “Yes, he’s 92 years old, but the eyes and the smile are seared into your memory.

“It was terribly moving having him there.”

Blunt takes on the role famously played by Julie Andrews 54 years ago, with the famous nanny returning to the Banks children 25 years later after a family tragedy.

Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns marks the first time in 54 years that the character, who was created in books written by P.L. Travers in the 1930s and 1940s, has been revisited on film.

The story was turned into a Broadway and London stage musical 15 years ago.

Director Rob Marshall said he got involved in the sequel because he felt the world needed some Poppins magic.

"The world’s in a fragile place you know," he said. "I feel it personally and I know that everyone on our film felt it, the entire cast."

The film, which has received rave reviews from critics, will be released on December 21.
