Riverdale season 3 episode 6 recap: What happened in Manhunter?

This week on Riverdale sees the gang being pursued by the Gargoyle King as the mystery around him and his followers deepens.

Betty is nursing Archie to health in the bunker when Jughead returns and reveals he saw the Gargoyle King with a gang of masked followers worshipping him. Betty wonders who they are and then Archie I rejects that he thinks Joaquin has joined “a new gang”.

Jughead still thinks Warden Norton could be the Gargoyle King.

Betty returns home and Alice reveals the Warden killed himself in a G and G ritual. Betty also denies having anything to do with Archie’s escape as a manhunt is under way.

Archie and Veronica enjoy an intimate moment in a bunker, where he reveals he wants to find the paid witnesses who falsely testified against him. Veronica puts him off due to the manhunt, but she wants to look in to his case files.

The Sheriff interrogates the students of Riverdale High about Archie’s escape, before Josie experiences a seizure. Betty later wonders what the connection is between her, Josie’s, and Ethel’s seizures. Jughead and Betty also learn that Norton worked at Riverdale High when their parents formed the Midnight Club.

Betty hopes to trap the parents into giving more information, while Jughead rallies the Serpents to find Joaquin.

Kevin finds that Archie’s wound is infected and Betty gives him a contact for a discreet doctor – mortician Dr Curdle Jr.

Betty invites all the parents who played G and G to Veronica’s speakeasy for answers. Hermione attacks Alice for telling Betty. Betty accuses them of lying and persuades them that they need to be honest.

Keller says that Norton confiscated the game once and Hiram Lodge says he knows nothing about the game and Norton.

Hermione accuses Penelope Blossom of killing Featherhead as she was the game master. Penelope denies it and says it was Daryl Doiley, who was secretly in love with her and poisoned the chains so they could “ascend” together. Daryl approached Penelope years later with guilt over the death and wanted comfort but she rejected him, prompting his suicide.

Betty still wants to know who the Gargoyle King is today, but all of the parents leave.

The Serpents locate Joaquin, while FP handcuffs Jug at home to his fridge to force him out of his G and G obsession.

Archie is treated at the morgue for his wound, and Kevin pays the mortician.

Veronica realises one of the confessions has been edited, but Hiram notices her investigations. Hiram then calls his associates to handle the “variables” in the Forest.

Betty frees Jughead and they set out for more answers.

Veronica informs Archie of the evidence tampering, and thinks the evidence they need is in the Mayor’s Office. Veronica breaks into Hermione’s files and finds damming evidence that the witnesses were coerced. Veronica sends the files in an email before she is arrested for breaking in.

Jug and the Serpents interrogate Joaquin, who reveals he did whatever he could to survive. Joaquin reveals that the Warden received orders from someone who wanted Archie dead and that the symbol he was branded with means he is a sacrifice. Joaquin reveals that Norton received orders from Hiram Lodge.

Jug confronts Hiram and accuses him of being the Gargoyle King and to blame for everything. Hiram denies it and says he’s above the immaturity of the game and is no murderer. Hiram suggests Clifford Blossom, Hal Cooper, Tom Keller, and FP Jones as suspects. Jug leaves and Hiram is called to pick up Veronica.

Veronica and Hiram clash in her holding cell and he refuses to give her contact with a lawyer. Veronica calls Fred and tells him where Archie is and their plan to free him.

Dr Curdle Jr. tells Betty that Daryl Doiley wasn’t killed by carbon monoxide poisoning as Penelope said he killed himself in his car, but died via poison ingestion. He says it’s likely Daryl was murdered.

Betty confronts Tom Keller on why he covered up the murder of Daryl Doiley and Keller says he did it to protect all of the members of the Midnight Club, but reveals he thinks Penelope killed Doiley. Keller is called by Fred and leaves.

Archie and Kevin go to the mines of Shadow Lake where hieroglyphics of the Gargoyle King are shown, and finds the Shadow Lake gang murdered except one who is injured. Archie and Kevin take him to get treatment.

Jughead and the Serpents find that Joaquin has been murdered and branded on his head with the “sacrifice” symbol. Jug is saddened but abruptly leaves, worried for Archie’s safety.

Fred and Keller get to the mines and report the murders, but learn that Kevin and Archie brought someone with a gunshot wound in to the hospital. Inside the hospital, Archie and Kevin learn that the man died.

Archie blames himself for all of the death and destruction and thinks he can’t return to Riverdale even if exonerated.

Veronica delivers the evidence to McCoy and it’s clear Archie will be exonerated.

Betty confronts Penelope “Aunty Blossom” about the poisoning. Penelope denies using the poison as it leaves traces and she’d have done a better job. Penelope points the finger at Alice, for she reported the death as a suicide.

Betty confronts Alice about the cover-up and the Midnight Club’s plans. The house’s power cuts out and figures knock on the house door, before the Gargoyle King is shown inside their home. The pair hide in Betty’s room and find Daryl Doiley’s gravestone on the bed with their names marked on it. FP turns up through the window and comforts Alice.

Fred and Keller make it to the hospital and Kevin gives them a note from Archie: he won’t be coming back to Riverdale regardless of how the case goes.

Veronica reveals to her parents that Minetta and perhaps even they are going down now the evidence has been handed over.

Alice tells Betty that she doesn’t feel safe and is going to stay at The Farm with Polly and the twins. Alice reveals that she knew Betty wouldn’t come, so she has her daughter committed to the Sisters of Quiet Mercy for her own safety on Edgar’s advice, to Betty’s horror.

Archie calls Veronica and thanks her now he is a free man, but he says he won’t come home due to the danger that Hiram Lodge poses. Archie tearfully tells Veronica how much he loves her, but he needs to leave to protect her.

Veronica breaks down as Archie walks away, but is given supplies by Jug to survive as he starts a new life. Jug tells Archie about Joaquin. The pair walk off down the rail road.

Betty arrives with the Sisters of Quiet Mercy and “safety”, but finds all the inmates painting the Gargoyle King.
