A mum’s controversial decision to charge her family members £30 each for Christmas dinner has actually been applauded.
Despite it being the season of good will, Hayley Garbutt makes her family stump up for their festive meal.
After spending a staggering £500 a few years ago, Hayley made the bold decision to demand money from her three kids, their partners and her four grandchildren.
They have happily accepted the idea and actually help plan the Christmas lunch to suit their tastes.
Hayley does all the cooking apart from the potatoes, which her daughter roasts, but even she doesn’t get a discount.

Vanessa Feltz was supposed to be in opposition but actually agreed with her
- Phillip Schofield ‘drools’ over ‘man crush’ Jason Mamoa as he grabs his trident
Speaking on This Morning, she said: "A few years ago when I bought my Christmas meal for Christmas Day I spent around £500. I couldn’t even shut my fridge.
"I was catering for everyone. I overspent. Cost of living has gone up horrendously over the years. The family grew, I got more and more grandchildren, my son and daughters had partners. It got too much.
"We sat down and discussed it. They were happy."
Hayley argued that it was far cheaper than going out for Christmas dinner and was more relaxing for those with young children.
Phillip actually thought it was a good idea
Presenter Phillip Schofield admitted he was sceptical at first but had been convinced.
He said: "When we heard this story we all thought ‘hold on’. The more we’ve heard, we think this is such a good idea. People do find it tough at Christmas, it is expensive."
Vanessa Feltz was supposed to be in opposition but agreed it was actually a very good idea.
She said: "The truth is I’m not really against it. I’m just jealous. She’s so brave. The problem is I’m not a good enough cook to charge. If I said pay me to cook they’d say pay us to eat it.
"It sound strict and demanding but it’s a compromise."
This Morning viewers backed Hayley
This Morning viewers took to Twitter to agree with Hayley’s decision to charge her guests.
One viewer said: "That woman is dead right charging them £30 for the Xmas dinner!"
Another agreed: "This lady that hosts Christmas Day for her family on #thismorning is a legend!"
However, lots of viewers thought it was an outrageous idea.
"Christmas is all about family and giving. It’s not about charging them. If you can’t manage it then go to one of the other family members houses," said one viewer.
Another added: "In my opinion, if you offer to host the Christmas Dinner then you pay for what you choose to make. If someone offers to partially pay for what you buy the where’s the problem. When did hosting go so wrong?!"
