Love Island star Megan Barton-Hanson has opened up about her fight against depression, revealing that she was talking to her mother about suicidal thoughts a mere six months before she dived into the high-pressure environment of the ITV reality dating show.
The former exotic dancer and glamour model has broached the topic before. Taking to her Instagram page on World Mental Health Day in October she wrote: “I’ve put writing this off all day as depression and anxiety are still pretty raw for me and part of who I am.
“Mental health issues are more common than ever especially with the increased use of social media and the resulting feelings of inadequacy.”

Megan has made strict rules for herself to prevent social media becoming a negative influence in her life. She avoids looking at her phone for the first hour of the day. And she switches it off before bedtime, saying: “Looking at everyone’s stories before you go to sleep doesn’t help you either!”

In an interview with musician Hussain Manawer published in todays Daily Mail, Megan says ‘"I have struggled with this on and off throughout my life…depression,’”
“I remember even this year in January I was on the sofa with my mum asking her permission. Asking ‘can I kill myself?’”
“And there was nothing she could do. She told me to call 111. It’s the worst thing watching someone you love suffer. And you can’t help someone who doesn’t want to be helped, they can’t see the light.”

Megan, 24, revealed that she had lost family members to suicide and says of depression: “If more people were open about it, there would be more hope.”
She describes the Love Island experience as having been ‘like rehab’ for her. “When I went onto Love Island I thought there was no way I was going to come out with a boyfriend.
Megan has spent serious money on cosmetic treatments
“I thought they were all fame-hungry people. I thought I will get a bit more money because my Instagram was struggling and my glamour modelling days were going downhill.”
“I thought it would make me famous and I would earn lots of money and that would bring me happiness but actually it was more like a rehab retreat for me, stripping everything back and forcing me to see what was most important in my life.”
Megan did in fact start a relationship on the show, flirting briefly with Eyal Booker and Alex George before finding romance with Wes Nelson.
At the end of the series Megan finished in third place, and has continued to date Wes since the show ended.
