Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer reveal secret to their decades-long friendship

Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer have admitted they get a bit sick of people quizzing them about whether or not they’ve ever fallen out.

The TV duo, who hail from the North East, have been the best of friends since the 1980s.

They met one night when Bob, a solicitor, went along to see his co-star’s stage show, Vic Reeves’ Big Night Out.

Bob loved it so much that he began to join in, and 30 years later, they’re one of the UK’s most treasured comedy double acts, known for their many TV shows, including Shooting Stars, Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) and Catterick.

Now, they’re back with a brand new series of Vic & Bob’s Big Night Out, this time, lending their nonsensical comedy musings to BBC Four.

At a preview screening at BFI Southbank, Mirror Online asked the funny pair what’s kept them together for all these years.

Bob, 59, told us: "The best part of our lives is just every day when we are writing. We could be 15 again.

"We are just having a laugh every day and that keeps you going."

Admitting that people often ask them if they’ve ever fallen out, Bob added: "There is nothing that gets on my nerves about Jim [Vic]. We have never fallen out. Although, he used to eat some specialist food and it used to f*****g stink.

"You can have a mate for 30 years, it’s easy. Vic, the first time I saw him, he was the funniest bloke I had ever seen in my life and he continues to be that person."

Vic, 59, whose real name is Jim Moir, added: "I don’t know what gets on my nerves about Bob. He always wore shoes that were the wrong size.

"When I first saw Bob he was gorgeous. We were both really quite hunky."

He laughed as he recalled: "When I first met Bob I had a cardboard face of Bryan Ferry. It was just the right look.

"Me and my mate had planks on our feet and we did a tap dance. That was the first thing Bob saw and he wanted to be mates with the bloke who created that."

Bob added: "To see a bloke like that at the time, it was extraordinary."

Vic went on to quip that while he was in a topless funk band, Bob was in a band with three old ladies called The Bakewell Tarts.

Vic and Bob also revealed that TV bosses have had very little input in what they’ve done on their wacky shows over the years, saying they’re simply left to get on with it.

Vic said: "To be honest, we have never gone into the BBC offices. We do it all remotely from a distant realm.

"We have been lucky. Nobody has ever said, ‘No you can’t do that’, as otherwise we would just go and do it. Privately. We are lucky nobody bothers us."

Bob added: "When our show went on telly 30 years ago it was just like our stage show so nobody interfered with it. It has kind of stuck with us. Nobody seems to supervise it."

The show features a number of sketches and songs written by the duo, who joked they had to write the songs themselves because Elton John wasn’t interested.
