We’ve got the first look at the Doctor Who New Year’s special – and Whovians might notice something very familiar about the Doctor’s choice of accessories.
The newly released image by the BBC shows the Thirteenth Doctor standing against a backdrop of fireworks, perhaps a hint of the drama we can expect to see?
But, more important than the background is her choice of winter accessories; namely, her scarf.
The brightly coloured, stripey scarf matches her outfit and, although much shorter, it’s a nice homage to Fourth Doctor Tom Baker’s iconic scarf.
Of course, it isn’t the first nod to a previous Doctor’s sartorial choices; the stripes on her t-shirt closely resemble the stripes of the Fourth Doctor’s actual scarf, and we’ve had braces (Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor), and the long coat in a style that many now associate with David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor.
Not to mention the appearance of the fez in Kerblam!

It’s nice to see yet another homage with a twist – something that shouldn’t be a surprise as Jodie Whittaker has previously commented on how every part of the costume, which she helped design, means something.
And it looks like we’re going to be sticking with the Earth-heavy time-travelling escapades, as the official synopsis for the episode written by showrunner Chris Chibnall reads: "As the New Year begins, a terrifying evil is stirring, from across the centuries of Earth’s history.
"As the Doctor, Ryan, Graham and Yaz return home, will they be able to overcome the threat to planet Earth?"
History and undefined evil – what more could you want?
The Doctor Who New Year’s special airs on BBC One on Jan 1, 2019.
