Simon Cowell sobs on stage at video of terminally ill children

He might play Mr Nasty on TV when judging The X Factor .

But Simon Cowell proved he has a heart at the Together For Short Lives charity event on Tuesday night when a video clip about terminally ill children left him all choked up.

The music industry boss, 59, was called to the stage at the bash after the audience watched the emotional clip, but struggled to regain his composure as he fought back tears.

Simon’s partner Lauren Silverman , with whom he shares four-year-old son Eric, comforted him on stage before giving a short speech.

Lauren, 41, who also appeared to be overcome with emotion, stressed the importance of raising awareness for the charity.

She said: “Oh God, I think what Simon was trying to say is that tonight is very important because no matter how much money we raise it’s also about raising awareness and I think anyone in this room…

“I don’t even know what I’m saying I’m just trying to speak for Simon – anyone in this room who’s a mum or a dad or who has a heart frankly can understand that seeing somebody in these situations is inconceivable – unimaginable.

“But what Together for Short Lives and all these charities do for these families and the children is unbelievable.”

Simon managed to regain his composure long enough to encourage the audience to visit the charity themselves, admitting that it puts life’s troubles into perspective.

He explained: “I would say to anyone genuinely just go down there and see for yourself what it means to the families, to the staff to show your support.

“Everything you think is a problem in your lives, trust me it is nothing. I think what you guys do is incredible – I couldn’t do this on a day to day basis.”

Meanwhile, an onlooker told The Sun that Simon was comforted by Lauren when he became overwhelmed on stage.

“Simon struggled to hold back tears as he watched a video of him and Lauren spending the day with terminally ill children at the ceremony,” the onlooker revealed.

“He was clearly really moved by the experience and reliving it in front of a room full of people proved too much for him.

“Lauren acted at just the right moment and came to Simon’s rescue so he wasn’t alone – she was his perfect support.”
