Noel Edmonds was ‘desperate’ to be liked on Deal or No Deal as he was offered the gig after five years of a career wasteland.
In a recently unearthed article by journalist and screenwriter Jon Ronson, Noel admitted to liking how excited fans became when they met him in person, which came as an antidote to his spending five years without a role on TV.
He also believed that positivity was the name of the game, saying he would keep all negative people away from him as he kept tabs on the contestants, making sure they were sending good vibes – something his representative has denied he still believes.
Noel told Jon, in the 2006 article Think outside the box: "I want to be popular. I want people to like me.

"Not long ago I talked to someone in the audience and she went to pieces. Just because I was talking to her! It’s really important I keep my feet on the ground here."
He went on to describe how he "gets a feeling" about people, and thought he could work out how well they would perform on the show by simple things like how they walked, or "their aura."
One man Jon met, named Edward, won a tiny amount after Noel had said he felt he wouldn’t do very well.
Noel said he tries to "distance" himself from negative people, not wanting them to be around him at all, which could be tricky if the rumours are true about him entering the I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here jungle.

Continuing about Deal or No Deal, Noel said: "Did you know someone’s compiling a dictionary of my phrases? Somebody else is tracking the repetition of my shirts, trousers and shoes.
"I’m delighted people are reading so much into it."
Noel got the job after five years off the TV, when Noel’s House Party finished in 1999, but he believed this was the Cosmos answering his request for a "TV challenge," much like when he asked for love and met his former girlfriend, Marjan Simmons.
But one of the more shocking revelations Jon came across was the call sheet, which had information about what each of the contestants had been getting up to the night before, which was, according to Jon, compiled by producers.

Noel explained it away, saying: "It started because of ill health. Everyone was getting colds, I needed to know what was happening."
But it continued for a little while after the cold spell, and Noel was even told about a contestant named Tony, who had become obsessed over Noel thinking he was miserable.
Tony’s concerns came when Noel joked about him dressing like an "undertaker," starting a full-blown obsession about the host’s thoughts.
Tony told Jon: "If only he could see the real me. Maybe I should have laughed or something.
"But to stand there and laugh at nothing? It’s hard. And I didn’t sleep well last night.
