Cheryl’s comeback single ‘sells just 5,000 copies’ after disastrous X Factor performance

Cheryl’s music comeback isn’t working out quite the way she planned – as her new single Love Made Me Do It has plunged even further down the charts.

The mum of one’s new track, which she performed in a widely panned X Factor appearance, entered the charts last week at No.19 – and has already fallen to No.48.

According to the Sun, just 5,000 copies of the sultry single have been sold – a far cry from Cheryl’s heyday as one-fifth of the chart-topping Girls Aloud.

Her online streaming figures are slightly better at 460,000 plays on Spotify this week – but current No.1 Ariana Grande has outstripped her with a whopping 6.3million plays of her breakup anthem Thank U, Next.

"It’s dropping down the rankings fast this week despite it being her big comeback," a source told the newspaper.

"It could easily end up falling further by the time the final charts are unveiled on Friday."

Embarrassingly, Cheryl swore last week that if her music failed to strike the right notes with fans, she’d pack her showbiz career in once and for all to concentrate on being a full-time mum to toddler son Bear.

The awkward news comes hours after Cheryl took her critics to task for the "relentless abuse" she’d received in the wake of that X Factor performance, which saw her writhe around on the floor and lick her own hand in a bid to be sexy.

In a statement, she admitted that her music and performances are "never going to be for everyone".

Cheryl lashed out at the ‘abuse’ she’d received following her X Factor performance

"I let a lot of things lie but the sheer level of unbalanced negativity towards me in the tabloid press these past few days has been quite frankly shocking and I need to address it," she went on.

"This level of relentless abuse should not be tolerated in any walk of life."

She also complained that her "appearance", "body size" and "shape" have been commented on in the days since her return to the stage.

"I did watch my performance back and I LOVED IT!" she added.
