Michael Gondry adapting Ubik.
If I were to list five adaptions that if adapted well, I could die a happy man. They would be: Blood Meridian, Akira, Robotech Manga Cross, Enders Game, and a work I never thought would hit the big screen, Ubik. If you’ve never heard of Ubik, you might want to click over to Amazon and pick up a copy, it is really fucking good.
I think I referenced it in my review of Inception? I don’t know. Lemme check. (Pause) Nope. I did mention Philip K. Dick, the novel’s author, so everyone knows what book I was referring to…. I had this phase in college where I ran out and read like every fucking Dick novel that I could find. Weird right?
Anyway, Akira, Robotech, and Ender’s Game all look like their going to be getting to the big-screen, but what about Ubik? C’mon. Who could actually pull this off? The story is too fucking crazy. I suppose there are only a few people who could get close: Christopher Nolan, Michael Gondry, and maybe someone really fucking smart like Darren Aronofsky or David Fincher.
My point is Playlist is saying the Gondry is adapting the book. It is kind of a dream come true for me. I really don’t think the book could be in better hands. I died a little inside when Akira got handed to the Hughes brothers and I’m still terrified of what exactly will happen to Ender’s Game, but Gondry is perfect. I really do doubt the movie will ever see the light of day because it is just so fucking weird. They might convince studios that Inception is proof audiences want a movie like this.
In that respect, and I’m not trolling when I say this, Inception is a fucking kindergarten’s story in comparison. Ubik is a labyrinth to behold. Where nothing is what it seems and there are no narrative absolutes. Unlike many other people who are posting about this story, I’ve actually read the fucking book and can tell you that most of the time spent making this movie is going to be making it palatable for an audience. I’m not even going to bother with putting a synopsis in because either you’re going to read the book or you’re not. Glancing at a synposis is just going to make you more confused. Anyway, I’ll try my best to keep abreast of things
