Hugh Jackman talks about new Wolverine movie

(Comment or tell me to fuck off IMDB forum style below)

Update (a couple hours after I posted article): I was correct that 6,000 calories was odd, that part of the interview made CNN’s front page latest news section.

Not much of a story here, but definitely some cool updates about the Wolverine movie. It looks as if my dreams of a great X-men film might come true between Matt Vaughn’s adaptation and Aronofksy’s new adaptation of the Japanese period in Wolv’s life. Read the full interview here at http://herocomplex.latimes.com, because, as always, Jackman is pretty honest and cool about stuff.

First off, what stood out to me most was Jackman’s dietary and physical preperation for the film saying that he’s up to 210 pounds from his previous on-screen weight of 190 pounds and goes on to say, “Darren said with the last one, ‘Hey you looked great, but you’re so tall that in those long shots you looked kind of like Clint Eastwood, and that’s not Wolverine.” He said that Wolverine, in the comics, is powerful, stocky, you know, he’s short and thick. So he said, ‘I want you to go there, get bigger.’”

Something Jackman must have taken to fucking heart because when asked about his physical prep for the role and calorie intake he said, “It’s 6,000 calories a  day, it’s rough.” 6,000 calories a day? 6,000!? I’ve heard of high calorie, body-building diets before, but never anything like that. Holy shit! Considering he was at 190 and looked like he did in Wolv Origins, what is he going to look like around 230? Which I imagine is where he is going to land.

I’m mentioning this not because I’m gay or dig dudes that are jacked, but because a HUGE part of that character is being the a stocky, hunched-over guy with a crazy attitude.

Moreover, Jackman said this in regards to when he got cast in the original film, “I was kind of hanging around and reading all these comics,  because I was cast before I ever read any X-Men comics, so I was trying to get my hands on everything. I remember saying to Lauren Shuler Donner [the film's producer], “Lauren, I don’t know about you, but I’ve seen this Japanese story, and I think it’s so good. It’s just genius, it’s brilliant.” I take a bit of issue with that statement, because Wolverines entire story is brilliant, especially his origin story and they went and fucked it all up.

I’m not going to say the original was bad, Transformers 2 is bad, X-men Origins: Wolverine was unwatchable. The only thing that saved it a little was the fact that Hugh has the acting chops and presence to make the character interesting. I could literally raint for hours about why Origins is one of the worst, if not the worst, adaptation ever made. I should do an article sometime about that. Moroever, E-mail me at collin.gilbert@podcastfilmreview.com or comment below and let me know what you think of Origins or this new movie. I don’t want to be alone in thinking that movie was bad.
