Machinima, its effect on filmmaking, and a new feature length film using the bizarre technology
This might be the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. It is pretty fucking widespread already, but hopefully someone will find this movie through me and make me feel cool.
Machinima is a kinda’ new, but old, way of making a movie with the use of a video game’s engine. It is innovative…but I’ve never really seen it but to great use. A recent popular example is below:
A lot of people were impressed by this, but I’m kinda’ split. It isn’t really clever. It is high school writing.
This is the main problem with this type of stuff. Filmmakers are given interesting tools, but a lack creativity is stunting. Ironically, South Park’s satirical look at WOW might be the best execution of Machinima. I’m usually more interested in the technology involved than I am the actual narratives.
There are much better examples out there. Red vs Blue is comes to mind…or is it Blue vs Red? Lol, I’m not sure.
Regardless, for some reason the GTA 4 engine is being utilized more and more for Machinima. Maybe because the toolset avaible to filmmakers is more widespread with that particular game.
Who knows? But an actual feature length film has been made using this approach. Which I think is fucking awesome. It might not be good, I’ve only watched a little of it. But it is a really fun approach to rising new form of filmmaking. The visual compositions are strong, but the voice over active reminds me of the German guy from the The Room.
Its funny, because this comes on the heels of Park Chan-Wook making an Iphone movie. As technology becomes more and more avaiable to everyone the quality of storytelling is dropping, but who cares as long as people are experiment well.
