The king of cult films Johnathan Ross signs a deal to host shows about French movies on Cinemoi
Johnathan Ross is not a big name in America, but in England he is, or was, the David Letterman of British television.
Assessable, charismatic, controversial, but amongst everything else he is a fanatic film expert. One of the most knowledgeable minds about cinema in the world. Ross left his job as a host on BBC and I was really hoping he would do a cool movie program.
UKPA reports that Ross with be hosting programs and has become a contributing content director of the TV station Cinemoi. There he will discuss and present classic and contemporary French movies.
In regards to the programs he said, “French cinema isn’t just for intellectuals and film buffs, it really can be enjoyed by everyone. There are some amazing films coming out of France at the moment, some real blockbusters that give Hollywood a run for its money. If you crave something a bit different from your Saturday night movie, then Cinemoi is a really good alternative.” This station will no doubt be fantastic.
Ross has THE BEST television programs about movies. Period. No one comes close.
Notable examples are the following:
“Japanorama”: An exploration of Japanese culture with a focus on filmmaking and television. Ross spends a great deal of time interviewing famous directors, animators, artists, and other important figures in Japanese pop culture. Every name you can think of that is important, is in this. It is a MUST SEE.
“The Incredibly Strange Film Show”: His best program. Shot in the eighties, Ross interviews and shoots behind the scene footage of unique cult filmmakers from around the world including Jackie Chan (before he was famous in the west), Sam Raimi (while he was shooting Evil Dead 2) John Waters (after his release of Hairspray) Russ Meyers, and many more. Another must.
“Asian Invasion”: Is a show made in defense of the idea that contemporary Asian films are not unique or awe-inspiring. Ross interviews and does exposes on Asia’s best films and directors.
There is no way to get these shows in America. I’ve seen them only through luck and chance. Find them or buy a copy of them on Ebay or something. We’ll have to wait a while to see his French shows, but these shows will help you wait.
