Sequels day part 1: Danny Boyle says there will be a Trainspotting 2

How can they do a second?

Some cool news I came across today while reading up on Danny Boyle. Moviefone, a really fucking awesome website about movies, reports that in a talk with Danny Boyle he came out and said that he is planning to do a Trainspotting 2. Whaat? Danny Boyle says this:

I mean, we’ll approach them all again about it, but it will depend on what place they’re all at. We have a very strong idea that it would be a wonderful thing to reapproach, to do again, when they have aged clearly into a mid-life kind of crisis, basically. They’re not quite there yet, I don’t think.

I don’t think this movie is coming anytime soon, but still. What the fuck would it possibly be about? I remember I was in high school with my middle school history teacher Mrs. Douglas and she mentioned I should check out this movie Trainspotting,”It seems like something you’d like”. Well, it was. What made it so unique, however, was it seemed timely. Again, obviously Boyle will make an awesome, very watchable sequel if it gets made. But Trainspotting was ultimately a critique of a consumer-obsessed society of the late eighties/early nighties more than a “drug movie”. How can they return to the subject?

You couldn’t do a Fight Club 2 because the period in time of satire is singular. It was our American answer to a similar theme of consumerism and rejecting society and embracing chaos. Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think this movie will work. Again, not because Boyle won’t make it really entertaining, but what could they possibly cover in the second that won’t alienate expectations?

Welsh's second novel Porno

The sequel novel to Trainspotting titled Porno? Nope. Boyle and McGregor agree they might use that as a jumping-off point, but they’re likely to write their own material….which is cool. Anyway, I’ll be keeping my eye out for more news on the subject.
