Sequel Day Part 2: Crowe asks for people to write to Fox Executive and push a Master and Commander sequel.

More cool sequel news is coming in today. It isn’t quite as exciting as the Trainspotting shit, but it is still pretty damn cool. Cinema Blend mentioned in this article that Russell Crowe is pushing people to write Tom Rothman, a film exective at Fox, and tell him they want a Master and Commander sequel. There are numerous novels  in the series and endless material to pick from so what is stopping production of another film? Well, I’ll get to that…

I think that Crowe’s intetions are in the right place, but no executive will be very interested. And why is Crowe pushing for a role he already did? Hardcore actors generally don’t like to reprise roles. Most of them don’t want to return to charcter they’ve already experienced…or so I think. Or maybe people are just fucking annoying him about it all the time and he was like, “If you want the movie to get made don’t fucking ask me, ask the person in charge or I’ll punch your face in, mate,”.

Crowe needs this movie though. His clout as a dramatic actor has kind of dropped in recent memory. He is as solid as they come when it comes to performances, but the period of L.A. Confidential, The Insider, Beautiful Mind, Master and Commander, and Gladiator seem like distant memory.

Master and Commander is a masterpiece and it was heavily anchored by the cool-headed, intellectual machismo that Crowe provided. The film made over two hundred million bucks, so what’s the problem?

Well, now that movies are ballooning to 150-200 million dollar range, movies are expected to gain 150 million+ dollar profit just in the gross. Also, I don’t imagine period dramas have much clout when it comes to merchandising. Such as comic books, figurines, dolls, video games, etc etc.

Also, where the fuck has Peter Weir been? A master of form, style, and entertainment the dude has been off the map for almost a decade. I hear he has a movie coming up in the next few weeks but I certainly have heard nothing about it. Whatever. Hopefully the influence Crowe has can get the wheels moving on another MAC
