Darren Aronofsky discusses The Wolverine and his approach to the movie.

As Aronosfky prepares to shoot this movie, I’m trying my best not to shoot a load. The more I hear about Aronofky’s approach to the new Wolverine flick the more I’m convinced of its eventual greatness.

Aronofsky, always experimenting, seems to be taking on this movie with his usual reckless abandon. He is unproven as a “big-name” director and this might be a chance to prove to executives that he has what it takes to make a big-budget action flick without alienating audiences.

I remember that Quentin Tarantino was the one who came up with the idea to reboot the Bond series with Casino Royale and wanted to direct the film, but the producers weren’t having it. They didn’t trust him to make a bond movie. Aronofsky has to earn similar trust, that is, if he cares to.

Check out the interview with him below, also check out DP/30′s website where they have tons of other awesome inteviews.

Regarding Aronofsky’s decision to make this movie, I don’t know how anyone can be shocked. He was trying to do a Robocop movie for years and was rumored for the batman reboot and Watchman adaptation.

This has been a long time coming. What is shocking is Aronofsky’s ridiculous mustache and scarf combination. He’s a director so the “I’m preparing for a role” routine won’t hack it here. He looks like he’s going for the jewish John Waters look.

What was most interesting about what he said that he was hired for “who he is”, hinting that the key visual styles, uncompromising film language, and willingness to pull great performances, are skills he plans to bring to the table.

Aronofsky’s first film, and subsequent films to a lesser degree, were heavily influenced by graphic novels, comics, and Japanese cinema, so the new film’s Japanese setting might be a perfect storm for one hell of a movie.
