Oldboy director Park Chan-wook just might be making his first English language film
I just finished my article about Old Boy being one of the greatest films of all time when I came across this article about Park making his first feature in English. He is set to direct a film called Stoker starring Carey Mulligan.
The description sounds more like a character drama. Frankly I don’t care what the movie’s plot or story will be because no film produced in America will ever live up to his fan’s expectations.
It will not be the violent viciousness that people expect from Park Chan-Wook. Most people will be surprised, or maybe not, that Park is actually quite a humanist. His film Joint Security Area, about the Demilitarized Zone in South/North Korea, is one of the most humanistic approaches to an on-going conflict you’re likely see.
Moreover, I’m glad Park’s making his English language debut because maybe he’ll get more mainstream attention in the western market. Or even become a popular important from another country. Who knows? But I guess there is a likelihood that anyone who is going to sit down and watch a movie like Thirst or Sympathy for Lady Vengeance already has.
